6 Reasons Pokémon Go Should Be Part of Your Next Event

Aug 30, 2016 | Articles

Pokémon Go is a free smart phone app, using location data services to create an augmented-reality to capture virtual creatures, called Pokémon.  The game taps into your phone’s GPS and camera features to allow you to hunt Pokémon in the same real-world location.

With increasing popularity, the augmented reality apps and tools are here to stay!  The concept bridges the gap between physical and digital worlds, as well as, millennials and older adults.  Pokémon Go has spread through the community like wildfire engaging and encouraging people to explore for a new creature to capture.

Jump on the gamification bandwagon and bring a virtual reality to your next event!

1.) Pokémon Go is a “check-in” app.  Users merge their physical activities and digital lives by checking into event locations in order to earn badges to later on receive promotions or special offers.

2.) Is your event venue a designated PokeStop (a specific location where gamers can obtain weapons, eggs, and potions)?  If so, then you can set off a “lure,” which will attract Pokémon to your area for approximately 30 minutes causing an influx in attendees.

3.) Partner with Pokémon Go to become a “gym” – this is where players can battle or train at your location, which will drive foot traffic to your event.

4.) Measure event outcomes.  With mobile location data service apps, like Pokémon Go, you get the opportunity to engage with users and at the same time measure the effectiveness of those engagements, such as how long were they at the event or how many people “battled” each other.

5.) Learn about your customers.  With location data you can learn detailed information on where your customers go, where your competitor’s customers go, gender, age, and how they can be reached.

6.) On the flipside, give Pokémon merchandise away as contest prizes, or as a simple thank you for attending.  Entice people to interact with your sales team, or watch a demonstration to win a Pokémon Go prize package.  People will do anything to catch the next Pokémon!

Pokémon Go may be a fad that will fade out soon, but the trend of consumers and marketers connecting across digital and physical worlds is only going to continually grow.  Stay ahead of the curve and attracting all age groups by developing your next event marketing strategy around augmented-reality and location based data apps.
