If your business is preparing for spring cleaning, it’s time to do more than just sweep the floors and dust the shelves.
Winter can be especially hard on outdoor signage, leaving it faded, worn or damaged. Indoor signage gets dusty and shabby over time, too. And of course, time also takes its toll in the form of archaic styles and outdated information.
Spring is the season for renewal, so why not show off a fresh new look for your business? Here are some helpful tips to make your signs clean and appealing again:
Start with your outdoor signage. After a harsh winter, it’s always a good idea to evaluate your company’s outdoor signs. Carefully inspect your inventory to see if you need to repair or replace any signs and that the hardware is still in good shape. Make sure your outdoor displays are as bright and easily read as they should be. Check lighted displays at night to ensure that they’re fully operational and replace any bulbs that are dim or burned out. Correct minor problems like fading paint, general wear and tear, or deterioration from old age that can make your signs less than appealing. You should also make sure that the information on your outdoor signage is still current and that it reflects your brand image and marketing message.
Wash your signs the right way. Bird droppings, nests and bugs make signs look dingy. It’s especially important to clean road spray off of your outdoor signs, as it’s filled with salt, sand and other injurious materials that can wreak havoc if left untreated. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials when cleaning your signs as they can damage the finish and adhesives. Abrasive materials can leave scuff marks and a dull finish, as well. Simply use a sponge or soft cotton cloth and warm water mixed with a mild soap or cleaning solution to get your signs sparkling like new.
Use caution when cleaning with machines. When cleaning your gutters or pressure washing the face of your business, be careful around your signs and never pressure wash them directly. Pressure washing can knock the mounting loose and also damage the signs themselves. Leave some room around the area you’re washing and the sign to avoid damage.
Don’t forget your interior signs. While they don’t endure the same exposure to the elements that outdoor signs do, interior sign maintenance still matters. In many cases, a light dusting will do the trick. If you have acrylic signs, never use any cleaners that contain ammonia or other harsh chemicals because they will ruin the shiny finish. The best way to clean your acrylic signage is with lukewarm water and a clean micro-fiber cloth. Use a light touch and small, circular motions. Take a tour of your campus to ensure that all of your interior signage is easy to read, well-placed and accurate.
