Adler Display is excited to announce the completion of a unique historical display for the new Bedford Elementary School in Baltimore County.
This project, developed in partnership with Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects, showcases our commitment to preserving local history while creating engaging visual experiences for the community.
Problem
The construction of a new, larger Bedford Elementary School building to address overcrowding and modernization needs presented a challenge: how to maintain a connection to the school’s rich history and traditions while moving into a state-of-the-art facility. There was a risk of losing touch with the school’s heritage, including its beloved mascot, the “Bedford Bee,” and the memories associated with the original building.
Solution
Adler Display designed and created a custom historical display that beautifully bridges the past and present of Bedford Elementary School. Key features of our solution include:
- Honeycomb-Inspired Design: We crafted hexagon-shaped panels from birch wood, reminiscent of honeycomb cells in a beehive. This design not only pays homage to the school’s “Bedford Bee” mascot but also creates a visually striking and thematically appropriate backdrop for the historical elements.
- Mascot Evolution: We incorporated illustrations demonstrating how the “Bedford Bee” mascot has been depicted over the years, highlighting the school’s evolving visual identity while maintaining its core spirit.
- Photo Showcase: The display features a collection of photographs showing the original school building, capturing the essence of the school’s long-standing presence in the community.
- Artifact Preservation: Custom-built enclosed shelves within the display house tangible pieces of history, including a brick from the original school building and other carefully selected artifacts.
- Traditional Elements: The display showcases various school traditions, helping to ensure that these cherished customs carry forward into the new building.
This carefully curated historical display was installed on August 19th, just in time for the opening of the new school building for the fall 2024 semester. It will serve as a focal point in the new $53.6 million facility, which more than doubles the size of the existing school and increases capacity from 309 to 735 seats.
