Adler Display partnered with McDaniel College to create a powerful tribute to the college’s first Black students and the Black Student Union’s 40-year legacy on campus.
The Challenge
McDaniel College sought to renovate the BSU Clubroom to honor trailblazing students, including Madimbi “Raphael” Mayamona, the college’s first Black graduate in 1967, and the first African American students, C. Victor McTeer and Joseph D. Smothers Jr. (1969 graduates), and Charlene Williams (1970 alumna). The space needed to celebrate the BSU’s welcoming role for students of all backgrounds while fostering a sense of belonging across campus.
Our Solution
Adler Display collaborated with McDaniel College to design, fabricate, and install a space that pays tribute to the college’s pioneering Black students:
- Designed a room filled with compelling visuals, including photos, stories, and artifacts that celebrate the resilience and achievements of these trailblazing students
- Fabricated displays that balance historical reverence with modern craftsmanship, ensuring the room’s aesthetic reflects its significance
- Installed an inviting space tailored for gathering, reflection, and fostering community connection
The Impact
This renovated space stands as a living testament to McDaniel’s diverse community, honoring the past while inspiring future generations. The BSU Clubroom now serves as a beacon of inclusion.
