Visit Howard County wanted to transform its Welcome Center into a destination where visitors could not only orient themselves but also gain an authentic sense of the county’s history. The organization turned to Adler Display.
The Challenge
The project required a thoughtful approach to research and exhibit design that would highlight the county’s destinations, attractions, and unique cultures while fitting seamlessly within a building that itself carried landmark significance as a former Post Office.
The Solution
Adler Display partnered with Visit Howard County to develop a comprehensive historical display that combined educational storytelling with bold design elements. A striking half watermill was created as a sculptural centerpiece, housing historic photographs and interpretive panels that celebrated the county’s mill heritage. Surrounding the watermill, eight horizontal panels presented local attractions and some local history through a juxtaposition of text and imagery, while custom HOCO typographic letterforms provided a recognizable visual anchor. Adler’s team managed the full scope of work—conducting research, developing a timeline narrative, designing exhibit structures, interior design, fabrication, and installation.
The Impact
The reimagined Welcome Center now immerses visitors in the story of Howard County, connecting them to the region’s past while providing orientation for exploration. The project demonstrates Adler Display’s expertise in delivering complete history timeline displays—from research and narrative planning through design, artifact integration, and installation.
