Staying Healthy While On The Road During Exhibiting

May 23, 2018 | Articles

Exhibiting often means traveling, long hours, busy days, and lots of networking, all which can place added stress on your physical and mental health. In order to get the most out of your exhibiting experience, it is imperative to take care of yourself and stay as healthy as possible. Feeling good allows you to show enthusiasm for your company’s products and services, while being ready to field any questions that come your way.

Here are 5 tips for staying healthy on the road:

  1. Stay hydrated and well nourished. Choosing water, tea, or other non-sugary beverages is the best way to stay adequately hydrated. Keep a filled water bottle with you on the trade show floor to remind you to drink enough H2O.

Minding your food choices is also important on the road. While it can often be more difficult to eat healthy while traveling, it is possible. Think lots of protein, fruit, and fiber for breakfast, and refrain from skipping meals. Avoiding foods high in sugar will prevent crashes and eating smaller meals will keep you from feeling lethargic. This doesn’t mean you cannot indulge at all. Just be mindful and do so in moderation.

  2. Get enough rest. We all know how important sleep is to our health. It’s even more important while traveling, especially when fighting jet lag. In addition to getting a good night’s sleep on the road, take breaks when you need them. Schedule them in if you have to. Going non-stop may seem more productive at first, but will leave you lagging behind in the end. Also be mindful of too many late nights and alcoholic beverages, which can decrease sleep quality. While it’s great to have fun and enjoy yourself at the trade show, remember you are primarily there for business, not vacation.

  3. Mind your hygiene and be proactive against common ailments. Exhibiting means shaking a lot of hands and being around crowds, making germs easy to spread. Washing your hands, and/or using antibacterial hand sanitizer, is one of the most effective ways of protecting yourself against bacteria that can make you sick. In case of common ailments such as a cold, head or stomachache, or sore muscles, keep common medications on hand to stay in top shape.

  4. Exercise when possible, and bring comfortable shoes for long days. Spending long days on the trade show floor can wreak havoc on your feet and legs. Therefore, it is essential to wear comfortable, supportive shoes that you’ve warn before. Bring band aids in case of blisters and an extra pair or two of shoes to switch out when needed.

Exercise is also important, but can come in many forms. Whether you use the hotel gym, walk to and from your hotel to the trade show, do a quick workout in your hotel room, or walk around exploring the location, moving and getting fresh air will help boost your mood and energy level.

  5. Don’t forget about your mental health. Exhibiting mishaps, traveling to new places, and being “on” all day can be very stressful. Therefore, taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Keep in touch with friends and family, try meditation or listening to music to destress, or take a few minutes each day for some quiet time to check in with yourself. Only when you are in the best headspace can you best represent yourself and your company.
