Taking Your Awesome Exhibit into the Snapchat World

Sep 20, 2016 | Articles

Museums and exhibitions have a tough time attracting and keeping the attention of younger generations.  With the aim to connect to our millennials, museums are now joining the social media world of Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.  And by popular vote, Snapchat is easily becoming the best approach to connect to viewers from across the world.

Snapchat is a free mobile app that allows users to send pictures or videos that will disappear after 10 or less seconds.  The pictures or videos can be altered with filters, emojis, captions, and doodles.  In addition, users can build a ‘snap story’, which is a compilation of snaps to create a slideshow for viewers.

Through Snapchat, museums are creating stories of exhibitions, galleries, and installations to involve millennials and entice them to join.  Connecting the past to the present, museums are embracing slang-infused captions, and referencing pop culture moments to bring relevance to the exhibits.  Snapchat helps translate art into something more sociable and relatable for millennials to understand, like movie quotes and rap lyrics.

Snapchat is free marketing.  When creating a snap story, your viewers can screenshot their favorite picture, which typically is then shared on social media, generating free advertising for your exhibits and targeting younger demographics.

Cities, universities, local landmarks, and other public locations can create a Geofilter, which is a location-based filter used on pictures and videos.  It’s a fun way for users to share where they are, and what they are up to in that moment, while essentially promoting your exhibition.

Snapchat brings new life to exhibits.  Any attention to long forgotten or never before seen exhibits by the average person is receiving a second life.  Snapchat creates accessibility, and adding a little pop culture to the pictures and videos engages audiences on different levels.

Now what are you waiting for? Get your exhibit on Snapchat!
